The Gabbard Team’s tour of Hamilton, Ohio began with lunch at Hyde’s Restaurant, Inc. Hyde’s is one of the oldest eateries in Hamilton and a local favorite. It was established by two brothers in 1946. The Hyde Brothers moved to Hamilton in search of work after World War II. It began as an ice cream shop and evolved into the restaurant it is today. The diner sells great home cooked meals at reasonable prices. The Gabbard Team ordered the lunch special. Pick any two of the soup, lunch salad, and sandwich and get a coffee, tea or soft drink for just $6.99. The cheeseburgers and fries were a hit!
Next, we headed downtown to see all of the improvements that have been made. We easily found a parking space right in front of Sara’s House. Sara’s House is a quaint store that offers unique home decor items and gifts. The owner, Sara, was delightful. Her sales associate helped one member of the team find a one of a kind gift for under $20.
More time was spent meandering up and down the streets of downtown. There were art galleries, restaurants, coffee shops and other stores scattered in between thriving big businesses. After a quick visit to the steps of the Butler County Courthouse the group returned to the car. On the way they noticed the new Mercantile and Artspace Lofts. Both are historic buildings that have been saved from demolition and restored.
Back in the car, the team exclaimed over all of the beautiful architecture in Hamilton. The churches, businesses and government buildings all had wonderful details to admire. It was also fun to see all of the creative and decorative sculptures dotted throughout the city. Citizens commissioned so much public art that Governor Bob Taft proclaimed Hamilton the “City of Sculpture” in 2000.
Our next stop was RiversEdge. RiversEdge is a park facility along the Miami River. It’s location, between downtown and the German Village Historic District, offers a vibrant urban location for outdoor recreation, live entertainment and view of the river. The Great Miami Recreational Trail has been extended to connect with RiversEdge. Many residents were strolling along the trail during their lunch hour. The covered amphitheater is the focal point of the weekly live concerts that are performed there.
After a quick stroll along the river The Gabbard Team traveled over the bridge and back to High Street. We stopped to take a picture of a fabulous sculpture that had a water feature. It happened to be near True West Coffee so we quickly decided to head in. The eclectic coffee shop was artfully decorated. Members of the team enjoyed an Iced Chai and a Milky Way Frappe. Both were delicious!
The Team decided to tour around the Dayton Lane historic district next. The stately mini mansions were impressive. One resident enjoyed filling us in about the neighborhood, friendly neighbors and the history of some of the homes. He posed for a picture in front of his purple Victorian home.
It was getting to be late in the afternoon but there was still so much to see and experience in Hamilton. It was determined that we would soon have to make the short trip back.
The strides forward that Hamilton has been making were very apparent on our tour. The city is experiencing a complete revitalization. New construction, new businesses and more employment opportunities are all making Hamilton a better place to live, work and play.
